Tutorial: Create an Ancestor Altar

Preview

So, you want to create an ancestor altar? Cool. You’ve come to the right place. My ancestors have been doing the heavy lifting for me since birth, but noticeably for me from age 5. If you know me personally, you know I rave about two things the most; the trees and my ancestors.

This is going to be a quick synopsis of how to create a basic ancestor altar and start opening the channel for their help, protection, and guidance on your path.

First things first, you need a sacred space to set up the altar. Preferably a place that won’t be interrupted by external energies. I have personally used a kitchen bar, fireplace mantle, nightstand, and dresser. Basically, any hard surface out of reach of pets, babies, and at least two feet off the ground to avoid hazards.

Next, you’ll want to stock up on candles. I keep a candle lit on my ancestor altar all day. Should you snuff the flames? Absolutely. Do I? No. Especially not when I am working on something of impact. When it comes to fire, use the candles at your comfort level. Faux candles can be used as well. I also have a Himalayan salt lamp on mine that I use specifically for channeling.

Crystalsssssss! Nonnegotiables are clear quartz, sodalite, scolecite, and rose quartz. Now, when it comes to crystals, each holds their own vibrational frequency emitting different healing properties. Aside from those four, I rotate other crystals based on what is going on in my life at the time. Use what you feel is necessary.

Fresh water and/or their favorite drinks. My grandfather’s favorite drink was Mello Yello. Every Christmas I give him peanuts and a glass of Mello Yello. My grandmother loved classic Coke. So when I have it, she gets it. Keeping water or other liquids along with the flame from the candles keep the channel open. While, the combo of sodalite and scolecite keep the communication channel clear. If you don’t know your ancestors, maybe you were adopted or family has passed away, keeping a clean glass of water, and some neutral snacks is sufficient.

Speaking of snacks, you can’t expect them to help you get a million dollars if you’re not feeding them. With what strength? You get what you give. When I have a plate of food, so do my ancestors. It really is that serious and my life reflects it. I can tell my ancestors something and the very next day, it is done. I don’t play about them and they don’t play about me.

I frequently write letters to them and place it upon the altar as well. I will pen either individual messages or a collective love and gratitude note.

Additional additives include photos, items or heirlooms from the ancestors. I only use those when directly channeling,

Oh, you thought we were done? You thought you could just create it, and leave it in the corner of your bedroom to collect dust and house your unused memorabilia?

No.

You are going to speak with your ancestors via your altar every day. Every single day. Dance with them. Share joyous experiences with them. This is an active altar, not a wishing well.

I quite literally twerk with my ancestors at least twice a week, often times daily.

Dust it weekly, adjusting the frequency based on dust collection. I make a habit of using Sundays as my altar reset day. I have multiple different altars around my home and tend to each as necessary, but they all get a nice rub down on Sundays.

Keep up with the liquids and food items to ensure freshness and avoid mold/pests.

Alternate crystals based on current need or emphasis.

My final piece of advice: give as much gratitude and show as much respect as possible. You are direct extensions of each other. They still live in you and you still in them. There is no separation between the two. Every moment of your own healing, also heals your past and future bloodlines.

And remember, treat this sacred space as just that. Sacred.

I love you.

Xoxo, Presh
